The main island offers several excellent sport climbing areas just a short drive from Cat Ba town, with a wide variety of routes and styles. Choose from Butterfly Valley, Fisher Valley or Buddha Cave, depending on your experience, the weather and what you’re looking for that day. With easy road access and routes for different levels, it’s a great option whether you’re trying outdoor climbing for the first time or looking to work on your technique and push your grade.
Butterfly Valley: Largest crag on the island with 71 routes between 4+ and 8c+ from slabs to vertical to roof climbing. Enjoy a tranquil and open view of Butterfly Valley! 20 mins from town.
Fisher Valley: 44 routes from 4a to 7c+ of great and varied climbing with all-day shade. Tucked between the mountains and overlooking a reservoir, Fisher Valley is a calm, quiet and peaceful hideout with a beautiful view. 20 mins from town.
Buddha Cave: 16 routes from 5a to 8b (including beginner-friendly routes 5a-6a), sheltered from the rain and sun and offers great climbing on tufas, roof & vertical vertical rock. 5 mins from town.

Take your climbing into Lan Ha Bay, where quality sport climbing meets turquoise water, limestone cliffs, and secluded beaches. A 30-minute boat ride takes you to Moody Beach or Tiger Beach, chosen according to conditions and your climbing goals.
Moody Beach is a more secluded spot with 6 easy routes from 4+ to 5c, and 2 intermediate routes 6b+ and 6c, making it an excellent choice for first-timers, beginners, or for practicing lead climbing.
Tiger Beach, probably Lan Ha’s best sand beach, offers 12 routes from 5a to 7b, suitable for groups of mixed abilities.
